Regina Carter has re-invigorated the jazz violin with a new spirit. Since she first gained attention in the late ’80s with the pop/jazz group Straight Ahead, the range of top artists who have benefited from her exquisite string work is stunning: Max Roach, Oliver Lake, Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton, and Billy Joel, are just a few. Classically trained, Carter’s own music is a travelogue through history and cultures, moving well beyond familiar jazz territory. The 2006 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship Award recipient continues her explorations with her latest offering: Southern Comfort, a reflection on the music of her father’s Alabama childhood.
