In order for an improvising musician to truly communicate with others on the bandstand, play with heart and nuance, and truly connect with the bodies and souls of the listener, a deep connection with the inner ear must first be established. In this three-part series, we will explore a meditative, holistic approach to practice that multi-tasks; moving physical technique closer to perfection, while improving harmonic dexterity; an internalized sense of time and rhythm; and establishing a stronger pathway between ear and execution. We will develop the tools needed to improvise from a creative, compositionally structured place, and to arrive at our own personalized melodic vernacular in a variety of contexts...
